WOOT! One week until we order our new computer. Hopefully we'll get it by Monday or Tuesday after next. It's such a pain taking a bus to my mom's or waiting for a computer reservation at the library. I mean, it's not that hard, but it sucks when I really want to check something at like 10 o'clock at night and I can't. :/ Ah well. Patience.

And AmeriCorps. I think I'm going to do the following, but what do you guys think? Feedback, plz.

It’s an exciting time to be involved in the policy-making process. Presidential candidates from both major political parties have been talking about the importance of National Service. House Resolution 6407 has been introduced, to eliminate the taxation of the AmeriCorps Education Award. A huge campaign will encourage dialogue about National Service, and culminate in nation-wide awareness-building events for the Service Nation Day of Action on September 27th.

AmeriCorps Alums is about building a national network of alumni civic leaders who help bring about transformative change to our most critical social issues. We are building a network of AmeriCorps Alums Policy Liaisons willing to serve as points of contact and grassroots lobbying leaders within each Congressional district – what a powerful force for change we will be!

As a Policy Liaison, you would be asked to represent AmeriCorps Alums in your Congressional District, spending about 1-2 hours per week (4-8 hours per month) on building relationships and relaying pertinent national service policy information between alums in your District, your Member of Congress and AmeriCorps Alums. Because we know that AmeriCorps alumni are action-oriented people, you will receive quarterly email alerts that will contain specific Action Steps that you can take in your home Congressional district. The following is a list of your responsibilities and the resources you will receive as a Policy Liaison:

Duties:

- The Liaison position representing each Congressional District will receive quarterly email alerts from the national office about AmeriCorps-related policy, which they use to take action in their home district.

- Disseminate information to alumni in their District, asking them to contact members of Congress.

- Contact members of Congress with specific messages.

- Build/foster relationships with local legislative staff.

- Relay pertinent information about legislators’ positions on national service issues back to the AmeriCorps Alums national staff.

- Opportunity to engage in or lead special initiatives, such as the 1st Annual National Service “Day of Action” on September 27, 2008.

Resources:

- Conference calls as needed for Q&A, idea sharing and training.

- Regular contact with AmeriCorps Alums policy staff lead.

- Online working group at www.AmeriCorpsAlums.org, where talking points and updated news and information is posted.

- Invite and scholarship opportunity for annual Capitol Hill day.

- Opportunity to attend annual National Conference on Volunteering and Service (June 23-25, 2009, San Francisco). AmeriCorps Alums pre-conference will include policy trainings and forums.

- Connection to diverse, unique group of Policy Liaisons across country all working toward advancing national service.

The Service Nation Day of Action sounds cool, how do I get involved?

We’re embarking on a proactive strategy that begins by raising awareness of the significant impact that AmeriCorps makes in communities. The first leadership opportunity we’re offering to Policy Liaisons is a role in organizing local events for the Service Nation Day of Action. On the fourth Saturday in September, AmeriCorps members, alumni and friends will be invited to share their stories of service in public places across the nation. Your role will be to secure a location, recruit local “storytellers” to assist in the process, and invite the participation of elected officials, their staff, and local partners.

You can read more details about the Day of Action on the attached planning checklist. If you have the time and energy to organize an event in your community, please contact Rosa Moreno-Mahoney at moreno_mahoney@americorpsalums.org, and mark your calendar for an Orientation Session Conference Call on either Thursday, August 14th, 2008 at 2:00 PM EST OR Tuesday August 19th, 2008 at 5:00 PM EST. If you included your phone number in the response to your initial e-mail request, you may receive a call from an AmeriCorps Alums representative to determine your availability for this important meeting.

We look forward to your contributions to the AmeriCorps Alums Policy Liaison Team, as we create a future in which the ethic of service is at the heart of every community!
